To perform various types of surgeries, we own a total of 25 operation rooms, each of which has different functions. In addition, we employ hybrid operation rooms equipped with a multi-axis angiography device, which are noted by many professionals.
General Intensive Care Center
The General Intensive Care center provides various types of intensive medical care for acute-phase severely-ill patients, including patients who have undergone surgery and those with internal diseases.
“The General ICUs, which has professionals qualified by the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine, is available 24 hours a day.”
In February 2011, the General ICUs was renewed along with the establishment of 10 special ICUs and 10 high care units (HCUs), and we have worked in interprofessional cooperation with nurses, clinical technologists, and physical therapists. To manage severely-ill patients, we are employing advanced life-support machines, such as extracorporeal circulation devices and circulatory support equipment.
Emergency and Trauma Center
The Emergency and Trauma Center at Keio University Hospital is committed to treating all emergency patients regardless of severity, adopting a North American approach to emergency care.
Emergency physicians, resident doctors, and dedicated ER nurses are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and always provide safe, high-quality emergency medical care through Keio’s unified team approach to medicine.
Additionally, center has assembled an internal support system that aids in seamless collaboration between all of the medical departments at the hospital. The Emergency and Trauma Center, as a Disaster Base Hospital in Tokyo, also serves as a center for medical rescue activities in the event of disaster.
Memory Center
The Memory Center is an outpatient clinic specializing in treatment for patients with symptoms of dementia, such as memory loss and poor comprehension.
The main goal of the center is the early diagnosis and treatment of dementia, but it also treats patients with moderate to severe dementia, assessing their condition and providing guidance on treatment and long-term care.
A main feature of the center is its interdisciplinary structure, which currently comprises seven attending physicians from the Department of Neuropsychiatry and three from the Department of Neurology. Treatment by a neuropsychiatrist or neurologist depends on each patient's condition. The center has established methods of medical care that emphasize objective evaluation of cognitive functions using various tests of higher brain functions. In addition, the two departments regularly hold joint conferences to thoroughly examine cases and improve the level of care provided at the Memory Center.
Center for Perinatal and Pediatric Care
At our center, all clinical departments taking care of women and children work together to provide advanced and safe medical care for a wide range of diversifying conditions in womanhood, perinatal period, and childhood. Clinical experts thoroughly manage medical conditions in patients who hope to become pregnant and who are already pregnant, so that every patient can go home with a smile. For maternal complications and fetal abnormalities, every clinical department cooperates to choose the best treatment for the mother and the fetus (neonate), and we commit to do our best to meet our patients’ needs. For sick babies, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) staffs will provide necessary care and treatment. For various problems occurring as the child grows, professional staffs from specialties engaged in pediatric healthcare (Pediatrics, Pediatric Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Clinical Genetics, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Dentistry and Oral Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology, Dermatology, and Ophthalmology, etc.) work together and collaborate to deliver the most advanced team care, and support the child’s health and bright future alongside each family.

Breast Center
At the Keio University Hospital Breast Center, we aim to provide first-rate personalized care to all breast cancer patients. We consider it our mission to fulfill an important social role in treating breast cancer with our hospitable medical team, comprised of breast care nurse specialists as well as other nursing and pharmaceutical experts in cancer care.
The remarkable pace of recent developments in breast cancer treatments has significantly transformed many aspects of cancer care. While it has been common practice for surgeons to treat breast cancer, it is now essential that experts cooperate across various medical departments to apply these new developments in patient care.
At the Keio University Hospital Breast Center, we not only treat breast cancer patients, but also leverage the expertise of each doctor in order to address any surrounding issues. This helps us to better understand the root of patient struggles and anxieties and then alleviate them. Furthermore, we have developed an infrastructure that greatly contributes to the continued improvement of medical safety, one that shares patient information with the entire center at regularly held conferences to quickly and efficiently identify any potential risks.
Breast cancer treatments and follow-ups can often take months, or even years, but during that time the Keio University Hospital Breast Center will always respond with the highest expertise and warmest hospitality. We promise to do our utmost to ensure the health and safety of all breast cancer patients.
Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine
In Japan, the median age at first marriage has risen by more than three years in the last two decades amid the country’s declining birthrates and more individuals choosing to marry later in life. There has been a rapid increase in the number of women unable to conceive due to age-related factors even without infertility symptoms. The number of assisted reproductive technology (ART) cycles in Japan has quadrupled in the past 10 years, and more than 5% of all babies are born using ART. As more women join the workforce and marry later in life, the number of families with no children or one child is increasing. For women who may only be able to conceive and give birth once, there is more demand from both families and society for advanced reproductive and perinatal care, including in vitro fertilization (IVF), intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), microsurgical testicular sperm extraction (microTESE), assisted hatching, oocyte activation, and preimplantation and prenatal genetic testing. On the other hand, marrying later in life is leading to an increase in the number of cancer patients who have not given birth, hence preserving fertility amid cancer treatment is also becoming more important for patients. Going forward, “the Center for Advanced Reproductive Medicine” hopes to fulfill the hospital’s social mission of responding to a broader range of needs in reproductive medicine; we can provide cancer treatment and fertility treatment at the same facility, as well as integrated support for fertility treatment and pregnancy treatment, including regional collaboration. Furthermore, as a medical institution with the function of conducting research, development, evaluation, and training on advanced medicine, we would like to engage in advanced medical care.
*Keio University Hospital is an ART facility registered with the Japanese Society of Obstetrics and Gynecology (facility no. 13077). ART procedures such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer will be registered with the society.
Interdisciplinary Pain Center
In 2018, the Interdisciplinary Pain Center was launched for management of refractory pain in Keio University Hospital. The Interdisciplinary Pain Center sees a variety of different diagnoses including acute pain after surgery or trauma, chronic low back pain, headache, neck pain, arthritis pain, neuralgia, fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), and many more. Our interdisciplinary approach, housed in a single location, includes traditional therapies as well as interventions that will help to improve not only the patient’s physical but also emotional well-being. Professional staffs with specialties of pain treatment (Anesthesiology, Orthopedic surgery, Psychiatry, Neurology, and Rehabilitation medicine) provide these strategies including individual-based pharmacotherapy, nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulation, radiofrequency ablation, mindfulness-based stress reduction therapy, physical and exercise therapy, sleep modification, pacing strategies, and relaxation techniques.
Center for Bone Metastasis Management(CBMM)
With the substantial advances in cancer treatments in recent years, an increasing number of patients can expect to survive long-term even if cancer has spread to distant organs including bones. Bone metastases, depending on their location, nature, and size, can cause pain, pathological fractures, and neurological symptoms such as neuropathic pain and spinal cord paralysis. These symptoms can result in a dramatic compromise in physical ability and severe impairment of activities of daily living in patients with advanced cancer. In managing patients with bone metastasis, the prevention of skeletal-related events and the maintenance of good performance status, rather than treatment after the development of skeletal-related events, are crucial in ensuring that patients benefit from the continuation of front-line cancer treatment. To achieve these goals, the establishment in each hospital of a bone metastasis cancer board that brings together expert opinions and adopts multidisciplinary approaches has been a nationwide development. Accordingly, to provide personalized treatment tailored to the patient, we created in our hospital in 2012 a bone metastasis cancer board including experts from the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery, Radiology, Palliative Care, and Rehabilitation and opened an outpatient clinic in our cancer center. Furthermore, we instituted the Center for Bone Metastasis Management in 2018 to ensure hospital-wide availability of highly professional, high-level bone cancer treatment in our hospital. The Center for Bone Metastasis Management has been seeking effective ways to manage highly diverse patients with bone metastasis in a large university hospital setting.
Sarcoma and Melanoma Center
The center strives to provide sarcoma and melanoma patients with the best possible treatment through interdepartmental reviews of multidisciplinary treatments that include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgical treatments. Treatments are centered on the departments of Orthopedic Surgery, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, General and Gastroenterological Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Gynecology, and Urology as well as related departments that include radiology (diagnosis and treatment) and pathology.
Skull Base Center
The Skull Base Center at the Keio University Hospital is equipped to handle all disorders of the skull base, which are difficult to treat and require a high degree of specialization. As such, only a limited number of centers are able to treat them.
To provide effective and optimized treatment for all of our patients, we engage in team-based medical care, utilizing the expertise and specialized techniques of related departments at the Keio University Hospital. These include neurosurgery, otorhinolaryngology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, ophthalmology, dentistry and oral surgery, as well as endocrinology for pituitary disorders and radiotherapy and radiography.
We combine our extensive experience and cutting-edge skull base surgery techniques to treat patients whose condition has been deemed untreatable. In addition to original surgical treatments, we also regularly perform innovative and minimally invasive surgeries such as endoscopic transnasal skull base surgery.
The Center is conducting the world's first clinical trial using vaccine therapy as a new method for disorders that are extremely difficult to treat.
We are also pioneering the next generation of team medical education to ensure that the Skull Base Center at Keio University Hospital will continue to lead the world in treatments for skull base disorders.
Allergy Center
The Allergy Center provides multidisciplinary care for common allergic diseases, such as hay fever, food allergies, asthma, and atopic dermatitis, many of which can emerge in a single patient.
The center consists of allergists in the departments of dermatology, pediatrics, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, and internal medicine and provides comprehensive and highly specialized allergy treatments.
For example, the center provides medical care for patients with the following conditions:
(1) Complications of multiple allergic diseases
(2) Severe or refractory allergic disease(e.g., Refractory atopic dermatitis after adequate topical steroids. Severe asthma needs oral steroids despite high doses of inhaled medication)
(3) No definitive diagnosis but is suspected of having an allergic disease(e.g., the patient experiences discomfort in the tongue and throat when eating certain foods or has swallowing difficulties or chest pains, but the cause is unknown)
Organ Transplantation Center
At the Organ Transplantation Center, liver and small intestine transplantations are handled by the Department of Surgery (Division of General and Gastroenterological Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery), and kidney transplantations are handled by the Department of Urology. In addition, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is leading the way in preparations for uterus transplantation as a new medical treatment.
Seamless coordination between all departments and divisions is essential for executing these kinds of organ transplants. The multidisciplinary Organ Transplantation Center was established to further improve the quality and efficiency of transplantation care at Keio University Hospital and to provide patients with ever safer and more secure organ transplants.
Craniofacial center
Since 1981, the Craniofacial Center has been treating patients who were born with craniosynostosis and other craniofacial anomalies. Initially, patients were treated by each department independently, but because of the uncommon and highly specific nature of craniofacial disorders, their treatment requires a high degree of specialization and cooperation between various departments. For this reason, team medicine is often practiced in Western countries, but there are still very few facilities in Japan that are able to provide the same level of patient-centered care.
Here, patients born with craniofacial anomalies can receive advanced, high-quality medical care from a highly specialized team of pediatricians, neurosurgeons, and plastic surgeons.
Center for Differences of Sex Development
Differences of sex development (DSD) is defined by congenital conditions in which development of chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomical sex is atypical. DSD can manifest in a variety of ways, from undescended testes or hypospadias to extremely atypical external genitalia that present major challenge regarding sex assignment. DSD is classified into three categories, 46,XY DSD, 46,XX DSD, and sex chromosomal DSD. Most cases require hormone replacement therapy or genital surgery, and importance is placed in long-term medical or surgical follow-ups.
The Center for Differences of Sex Development (CDSD) is the first center for multidisciplinary care in Japan established to treat all kinds of DSD, regardless of urgency, for patients of any ages. CDSD provides multidisciplinary care for DSD, expanding and improving on treatments that have been available since the 1990s.
CDSD has established specialized outpatient clinics centered around the Departments of 1) Pediatrics, 2) Urology, 3) Nephrology, Endocrinology and Metabolism, 4) Pediatric Surgery, 5) Obstetrics and Gynecology, 6) Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and 7) Neuropsychiatry, as well as the 8) Center for Medical Genetics. CDSD also works with nurses and clinical psychologists to provide multidisciplinary and cross-sectional medical care. The center not only offers medical and surgical treatment options for sexual dimorphism but can also assist in choosing the legal sex for newborn babies with atypical external genitalia and provide support for those dealing with gender dysphoria (or gender incongruence).
Overview of Medical Services Provided by CDSD
1) Sex-assignment Surgery of Internal and External Genitalia
CDSD coordinates with the surgical departments in performing sex-assignment surgery, such as urethroplasty, orchiopexy, clitoroplasty, labiaplasty, and partial urogenital mobilization (PUM).
2) Hormone Replacement Therapy
CDSD coordinates with the internal medicine departments in providing treatments consistent with the assigned sex and in accordance with the condition and severity of the disorder, including androgen, gonadotropin, estrogen, or progestin replacement therapy and Kaufmann therapy.
3) Genetic Counseling
Clinical geneticists provide patients and parents with any genetic information they wish to receive, such as the recurrence rate for future siblings and subsequent generations.
4) Assistance in Assignment of Legal Sex
Some DSDs discovered in the neonatal period are considered emergent conditions that require rapid testing to determine legal sex. CDSD is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, for newborns with DSD that require such urgent care. Each department in this multidisciplinary center works together to provide medical treatment and accurate medical information for patients and their families.
(Reference) Article 49 of the Family Register Act states that “a notification of birth shall be submitted within 14 days thereof.” However, it is not uncommon for newborns with DSD to exceed the 14-day deadline for determining legal sex. For these cases, notification of birth may be submitted on the 15th day or later with a doctor's certificate. CDSD has extensive experience handling such cases where notification of birth was submitted even after 15 days and has a system in place to provide support for new parents.
Diabetes Preemptive Medicine Center
“Preemptive medicine” is different from conventional medicine that is centered on disease and symptomatic treatment. It refers to personalized preventive medicine that minimizes the impact of disease by preventing the onset of disease itself through interventions that are tailored to the needs of each patient at an early stage before onset. We aim to control the progression of diabetic complications through preemptive medicine in the field of diabetes. Patients with diabetes each have their own unique backgrounds and circumstances. With type 2 diabetes, we aim to prevent the onset and progression of diabetes by improving lifestyle habits that can cause the onset of the disease, treating obesity, and protecting the function of beta cells in the pancreas, which are responsible for producing insulin. For patients with type 1 diabetes or unstable blood glucose control, we use state-of-the-art insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring devices to provide detailed blood glucose management tailored to each patient. Our center is staffed by doctors of nephrology, endocrinology and metabolism, ophthalmology, obstetrics, pediatrics, sports medicine, orthopedics, neuropsychiatry, dermatology, and vascular surgery, as well as nurses, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, and dietitians. And we have specialized outpatient clinics for type 1 diabetes, obesity, genetics, and foot care. We aim to provide preemptive medical care that is individually tailored to each patient and fulfill our social mission as a leader in diabetes care.
Center for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome
HBOC (Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer Syndrome) is a genetic disease in which a patient is born with inherited alterations (pathogenic variants) in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes, which predisposes the patients to breast, ovarian, prostate, and pancreatic cancers. In addition, since these genetic variants are inherited not only by the patients themselves but also by their families, follow-up with the families is also required. Therefore, it is necessary for multiple departments to collaborate and provide cross-disciplinary treatment for HBOC. Furthermore, the number of patients diagnosed with HBOC is expected to increase in the future due to the expansion of indications for new drugs targeting the BRCA gene in ovarian, breast, prostate and pancreatic cancers and the increase in diagnostic opportunities. The HBOC Center will strengthen the collaboration among the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Department of General and Gastroenterological Surgery, the Department of Urology, the Center for Medical Genetics, and the Cancer Center, and will strive to provide the most appropriate medical care for patients and their families by sharing patient care details, conducting comprehensive surveillance, supporting patients including their families, and providing professional genetic counseling.
Scoliosis treatment center
Vascular Tumors and Vascular Malformation Center
Hemangioma and vascular malformations were long grouped together under the generic term hemangioma, and because they can occur throughout the body, no one department could specialize in their treatment, with patients often needing to be seen by several departments. Today, the international ISSVA classification has become the standard for clinical classification of vascular tumors and malformations. The new ISSVA classification, revised in 2018, divides vascular anomalies into two main types based on the clinical findings, progression, and histological findings of vascular lesions: vascular tumors, which are proliferations of vascular endothelial cells; and vascular malformations, which are abnormalities in vascular architecture. Vascular malformations are further classified into four types: simple; combined; those of major named vessels; and those associated with other anomalies. Simple vascular malformations include capillary, lymphatic, venous, and arteriovenous malformations, depending on the major vessels involved in each malformation.
In 2013, Keio University Hospital opened an outpatient center specializing in hemangiomas and vascular malformations, where the departments of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and Diagnostic Radiology provide outpatient care and treatment. Because hemangiomas and vascular malformations occur throughout the body, the center has been collaborating with a number of other departments throughout the hospital. Through our interdisciplinary care initiative, launched in 2022, we aim to work even more closely with each department to provide the best possible care for our patients.
At the Vascular Tumors and Vascular Malformation Center, we also offer beta-blocker treatment (Hemangeol) for infantile hemangiomas, surgical resection and sclerotherapy for venous and lymphatic malformations, as well as surgical resection, embolization, and sclerotherapy for arteriovenous malformations. In recent years, we have also started to provide treatment using sirolimus, an mTOR inhibitor, mainly for lymphatic malformations.
